Orbs in pictures
A topic that has been passed back and forth in most conversations about ghost photography.
There is no solid evidence that orbs are related to paranormal events at all. No video capture of a orb turning into a apparition or connection between poltergeist activity and orbs. Not once has someone gotten on film some type of ghost phenomenon with a orb forerunner.
Now in the age of the digital cameras, digital voice recorders and digital video cameras we have more and more "evidence" of ghost activity but with nothing to back it up other than maybe a couple shiny "orbs" or EVP's (which I will talk more about about another time).
The Toronto GHRS asks the question:
The answer they came up with is a camera's flash.
Over the years the flash on a most cameras (35mm & Digital) have moved closer and closer to the lens. A better explanation of this comes from Wikipedia's page on photographic orbs:
This could mean anything close to or on the lens will be illuminated hence the abundance of orb pictures that are 99.9% of the time dust, moisture, insects, hair, smoke, fog, or really any particles you are going to have floating around in or outside. Digital cameras are worse for picking up these particles since not only are they built like 35 mm cameras but they are faster so your chances of spawning orb pictures are even greater.
Here are a few examples of orbs from Wikipedia:
Of course these are just a small example of the many different examples of orb pictures there are floating around the internet. And even though more and more paranormal websites or forums have started to discredit orb photo's as being proof of the unknown, some people have no use for scientific fact and will pimp out their "amazing pictures" to whomever will pay them any attention.
The worst part about the orb picture epidemic is that if you mention to someone how their easily their orb picture can be explained or how orbs have been debunked, they'll in most case be offended and some times even become hostile.
I was once kicked off a forum for commenting on a orb picture.
The picture was taken in a dark room with a mirror in the corner. In the picture the flash had been picked up by the mirror and created a bright star effect.
The person who had posted the picture ( and owned the forum ) posted it as a spirit forming from an orb into an apparition. Since I was so quick to point out that it was the mirror I was banned.
If you think I'm bitter you are mistaken, I'm just using this as a example as to how closed minded people can be when they want something to be real.
I believe 99.9% of the time orbs can be explained and the explanation most times is logical.
Until everyone in the world of paranormal investigation or ghost hunting comes to the same conclusion that orbs should not be considered definitive proof, orbs pictures are going to plague the internet for another decade or more
Here are some links to other sites and their take on orbs.

why do we only see this nonsense cropping up in the mid to late 90's??? Where are the orbs from the 70's??? What's changed???"
The answer they came up with is a camera's flash.
Over the years the flash on a most cameras (35mm & Digital) have moved closer and closer to the lens. A better explanation of this comes from Wikipedia's page on photographic orbs:
"Due to the size limitations of the modern compact and ultra-compact cameras, especially digital cameras, the distance between the lens and the built-in flash has decreased, thereby decreasing the angle of light to the lens and increasing the likelihood of light reflection off normally sub-visible particles. Hence, the orb artifact is commonplace with small digital or film camera photographs."

Re: Orbs in pictures
YAY!!! Thank you for getting that out early! I am so bloody sick of every particle of moisture in the air being labeled as a ghostly thingie. It's ridiculous.

Thanks,
Its unfortunate that even with a large majority of us making it pretty clear that we are beyond skeptical when it comes to orb pictures, there are new ones popping up everyday!
Those and the Television ghost pictures piss me off.
